Following on from the inspiration Zero Waste Events gave us at the Field to Fork Festival in May, and the success of the Shrewsbury Cup the Sustainable Newport team decided to bring this scheme to our town.

We put the order in with Cup Solutions with a planned delivery date in time for our stand at Newport Carnival. The colors chosen were the Blue and Green which feature in our standard logo, as well as the pink which goes with Newport in Blooms planting for this year. We were thrilled when they arrived the day before and so many local cafe’s agreed to make them available to their customers. This means that as well as our holding stocks which can be made available to traders standing at events in town to reduce their waste, we’re able to maximize their use throughout the year.

Launching the cup scheme also helped us to get a couple more business’s over the line to become accredited Plastic Free by Surfers Against Sewage. Well done to Deli 45 and The Den on your accreditation!

Where to get our cups

Since the launch the cup is available at many cafes in town and can be returned to those participating which are:

  • Deli 45
  • Gallery Cafe
  • Smallwood Lodge
  • Tabitha’s
  • Tea on the Cobbles
  • The Den
  • Smallwood Lodge
  • Subway

Getting involved

If your favorite cafe isn’t on the list simply ask the manager to get in touch with us at info@sustainablenewportshropshire.org and we’re happy to help. There is no additional cost to the business owner – their only outlay is the initial deposit of £1 per cup which they recoup when customers pay their deposit. If the customer wants a lid the business can provide one which means they’ve saved on the cost of the cup reducing their outlay.
